NID Card Correction Online in Bangladesh: Fees, Process & Documents

Introduction

Imagine you are trying to open a bank account, apply for a passport, or register a plot of land, and the system rejects you because your NID shows a misspelled name or an incorrect date of birth. Such tiny errors can block access to essential public and private services in Bangladesh. The good news is that the National Identity Card (NID) correction process is now fully digitised. You can resolve most mistakes from the comfort of your home using the official Bangladesh Election Commission NID Portal without any middle‑men.

The 4‑Category Complexity System

The Election Commission classifies correction requests into four transparency categories to prevent harassment and ensure a clear workflow. For the purpose of this guide, the two most relevant categories are:

  • Minor Mistakes: Simple spelling errors, a single digit typo in the birth year, or an incorrect father’s name. These are usually cleared at the Upazila or Thana level within a few days.
  • Major Mistakes: Changes that affect the core identity – full name change, date of birth alteration, or marital status update. These applications are routed to the Regional Election Officer or the central NID Wing Director General for a deeper verification, which takes a bit longer.

Step‑by‑Step Online Correction Process

Step 1: Account Registration & Login

Visit services.nidw.gov.bd. Click “Register” and provide your 17‑digit NID number, date of birth, and a valid mobile number. An OTP will be sent to your phone, followed by a face‑verification step using your webcam or smartphone camera. Once verified, you can log in with your newly created username and password.

Step 2: Profile Editing

After logging in, locate the “Edit Profile” (প্রোফাইল সম্পাদনা) button on the dashboard. Choose the field(s) you want to amend – name, date of birth, address, or marital status. The portal will display a short description of the required supporting documents for the selected field.

Step 3: Fee Payment

Before you can submit the correction request, the applicable fee must be paid. The portal accepts mobile‑banking payments via bKash, Nagad, or Rocket. Payment is confirmed instantly, and a transaction ID is generated for your record.

Step 4: Uploading Documents

Upload clear scans or photos of the supporting documents. Each file must be under 200 KB and in JPG or PDF format. The system performs an automatic size check; if a file exceeds the limit, compress it before re‑uploading.

Verified NID Correction Fee Structure

Correction Type Fee (Taka) Remarks
Minor Profile Correction (1st Time) ৳230 Includes 15% VAT
Minor Profile Correction (2nd Time) ৳345 Standard escalation fee
Major Correction (e.g., Date of Birth) ৳345 or more Subject to deep verification
Address Change Only ৳115 Relocation/Migration update

Mandatory Supporting Documents (Checklist)

Depending on the nature of the error, you must attach the relevant documents. Failure to provide the correct proof will result in a rejection.

  • Name Spelling Mistakes: Online Birth Registration Certificate (BRS), SSC/HSC certificates, or a valid passport that shows the correct spelling.
  • Significant Name/Surname Change: First‑class Judicial Magistrate affidavit + a newspaper clipping (national newspaper) announcing the name change.
  • Date of Birth (DOB) Correction: Digital Birth Certificate, SSC certificate/admit card, or a certified hospital birth record.
  • Marital Status Update (Spouse Name): Kabinnama (marriage certificate) or a registered divorce decree, plus a copy of the spouse’s NID.

Processing Timelines & Expected Outcomes

After you submit the application, the following timelines apply:

  • Minor corrections: 7 to 15 working days. The Upazila Executive Officer reviews the documents and updates the database.
  • Major corrections: 15 to 30 working days. The request is escalated to the Regional Election Officer, and in some cases, a physical verification visit may be scheduled.

Once the correction is approved, an SMS notification is sent to the mobile number registered with your NID. You can then download the updated digital smart NID directly from the portal and, if you wish, request a printed card at the nearest NID office.

Correcting an NID mistake no longer requires a long queue or a middle‑man fee. By following the steps above, you can securely update your identity details within a couple of weeks and regain full access to banking, travel, land, and government services.
